2 Emmeline Pankhurst sculpture

This is my vision for the sculpture of Emmeline Pankhurst planned for Manchester. My concept shows a dynamic figure whose contribution to the fight for women’s rights is still an inspiration for women all over the world today rather than as a passive depiction of an historical figure. My Emmeline is encountered on a cobbled surface resonating with the history of protest in St Peters Square. A timeline of significant events is inscribed on bronze cobbles inserted into the pavement charting the progress of the women's movement right up the the present day where blank ones indicate that there is still work to be done. Emmeline herself stands at 1903 when she founded the Women’s Social and Political Union. She strides forward demanding the right to vote for all women but there is conflict as she is being held back by two strong hands representing the “Establishment” attempting to halt her progress.
