The project began with a survey of the memorial with Purcell Architects and Council officials. The statue was originally carved in 1834 but its right arm was lost in the 1970’s. This was probably the result of a natural fissure in the stone. Although a temporary concrete version was added, its details were crude. My task was to remove the concrete one and initially sculpt a clay version so that the details could be approved. I conducted research into what the original details were like and concluded that Albert originally held a staff of office in his right hand. Once signed off I carved the replacement one in matching Carrara marble. Further to this, I cleaned the entire statue with Ph. neutral detergent and natural bristle brushes.
