This is a replica of a Roman ‘travelling’ quern used by soldiers and their retenue when on manoeuvres. It is taken from fragmentory examples found in the UK. Some examples of imported Roman pumice querns exist but these are very worn and often in small fragments as the material is abrasive but very soft.
